MMA drops two on same day

Castine, ME. – Kalie Judd (Peabody, MA) stuffed the stat sheet scoring 12 points, grabbing 6 rebounds, dishing out 4 assists and collecting 5 steals leading Plymouth State University to a 75-48 victory over MMA en route to the Mariner Invitational Tournament Championship. Judd was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player while teammate Amanda Kania (Manchester, NH) was also selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Rivier beat MMA 74-62 earlier in the day to go 1-1 in the tournament while MMA drops both of their contests.

The Panthers jumped all over MMA, flying out to a 15 point lead early in the first half. The Lady Mariners weathered the storm and made a push of their own, cutting into the lead and trailed by just 7 (37-30) at the half. Plymouth State once again proved to be too much for MMA in the second half outscoring the home team 38-18 and running away with the 27-point win.

Amanda Kania had a team high 19 points and 10 rebounds while Alicia Doucet (Manchester, NH) and Laura Kent (Bellingham, MA) each contributed 9 points.

MMA (1-2), who was playing their second game of the day, was led by Amethyst Cousins (Bass Harbor, ME) who scored 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Casey McCloskey (Howland, ME) and Alexis Bennett (Freedom, ME) each had 4 assists, but 28 MMA turnovers hurt the home team.

In the opening game of the afternoon at Margaret Smith Gymnasium, Jess Mellon (Rockland, MA) and Ashley Metivier (Hudson, NH) each scored 17 points leading the Raiders from Rivier College past Maine Maritime 74-62. Monica White (Augusta, ME) was the other Raider in double figures, pouring in 16 points.

Rivier overcame a 14 point first half deficit and a 6 point deficit later in the game en route to the comeback win over the Lady Mariners. The Raiders shot a sultry 54% from the floor and outscored MMA 43-25 in the second half.

MMA was led by Maggie Smith (Bath, ME), who scored a team-high 14 points and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Sam Goda chipped in with her second double-double of the year in as many games with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Courtney Dufour (Augusta, ME) was outstanding on the defensive end for MMA and was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Jess Mellen and Monica White were named to the All-Tournament Team for the Tournament Runners-Up, Rivier Raiders.
