Maritime Academy's Sam Goda (Eliot, ME) dropped 18 points, grabbed
seven boards, and notched five assists to lead the Lady Mariners
over Green Mountain College 70-52 in North Atlantic Conference
women's basketball action Friday evening. The hosts fall to 5-8 on
the season (0-3, NAC) while MMA evens their record at 8-6 (3-1,
NAC).
MMA
charged out of the gates, grabbing an early 10-4 advantage and, by
midway through the half, had extended the lead to 14 (24-10). The
Eagles responded closing to within five with 3:43 left before the
Mariners pushed the lead back to eight, heading into the locker
room at 36-28.
The
Mariners featured 11 different scorers in the opening 20 minutes
and their defensive pressure forced the Eagles into 16 turnovers.
GMC's Chelsea Paul (Northville, NY) tallied 16 of her game-high 23
points in the opening half to keep the home side in the game.
A
free-throw by Paul with 4:19 gone in the second half trimmed the
Mariner lead to three, but it was as close as the Eagles would get.
MMA closed the game on a 30-14 run, forcing GMC to settle for tough
shots.
Three
Mariners scored double digit points with Goda leading the way (18)
followed by Maggie Smith (Bath,
ME) with 17, while Jessica Stahl
(Bowdoin, Me) dropped 10. MMA grabbed 24 offensive rebounds on the
night and held a commanding 46-37 advantage on the glass.
Senior
Emma Brinley Buckley notched a double-double for the Eagles with 16
points, and 12 boards while swatting 6 shots on the evening.
The
Eagles return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Husson
University at 4:00 pm while the Mariners head to
Castleton.
