Castine,
ME. – MMA beat Gordon College 68-58 behind the efforts of
freshman Casey Everest to advance to the championship game of the
Mariner Classic Monday night. Bates College had six players score
in double figures en route to an overwhelming 94-49 victory over
UMaine Fort Kent in the other opening round game of the Mariner
Classic Monday evening at Margaret Smith Gymnasium.
The
championship game will feature the Lady Mariners (4-4) and the
Bobcats (7-3) at 4pm while the consolation game will pit the
Fighting Scots from Gordon College (5-5) against the Bengals from
UMaine Fort Kent (4-5) at 2pm. This will be the first ever meeting
between Bates and MMA.
In
the first game of the night, senior Kellie Goodridge led six
players in double figures with 17 points as the Bates College
women's basketball team coasted to a 94-49 win over UMaine-Fort
Kent on Monday in the opening round of the Mariner Classic.
Goodridge
(Merrimack, N.H.) shot 7-for-8 from the field and 2-2 from the
free-throw line to reach her season high in scoring, while adding
four rebounds and four assists. Senior Lauren Yanofsky (Belmont,
Mass.) and first-year Allie Beaulieu (Swampscott, Mass.) added 16
points apiece, with Beaulieu shooting 7-of-10 from the floor to go
with five assists and three steals.
Sophomore
Kelsey Flaherty (South Portland, Maine) scored a season-high 11
points on 4-5 shooting, and first-years Taryn O'Connell
(Georgetown, Mass.) and Bri Hawkins (South Portland, Maine) both
tallied 10 points and six rebounds apiece. Sophomore Annie Burns
(Topsfield, Mass.) dished out a team-high six assists and grabbed
eight rebounds. First-year Colleen Garvey (Haverhill, Mass.)
grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
The
Bobcats led the Bengals 47-32 at halftime before putting on a
dominating performance in the second half, outscoring UMFK 47-17.
Bates totaled a season-high 32 assists in the game as a team and
achieved large edges over UMFK in points in the paint (52-18) and
points off of turnovers (36-6).
Kristin
Violette led the Bengals with 16 points while Amber Garrison added
10. Maliesha Caesar had a game-high 13 rebounds.
In
the night cap, freshman Casey
Everest (Portland, ME) led MMA with a career high 16
points as the Maine Maritime women's basketball team earned a 68-58
win over the Gordon College Fighting Scots in the opening round of
the Mariner Classic.
Everest
scored 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor and 2-for-2
from the free throw line. The freshman forward also dished out 4
assists and grabbed 3 rebounds. Sam
Goda (Eliot, ME) had her third double double of the
season scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds
while Amethyst
Cousins (Bass Harbor, ME) scored 10 points. Goda
also added 3 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals in the
win. Casey McCloskey (Howland, ME)
contributed 4 assists while Brittany
Hunt (Hickory, NC) had a game high 4 steals.
Heather
DeKleine (Wayland, MI) led the Fighting Scots with 21 points and 6
assists while Kim Levinsky (West Caldwell, NJ) had a career night
with 20 points including six three point field goals. Rebecca
Carroll (Pleasant Valley, NY) played well in the loss scoring 11
points and grabbing a game high 15 rebounds.
The
Lady Mariners led the Gordon 30-29 at halftime before pulling away
in the second half, outscoring the Fighting Scots 38-29. Both teams
collected 20 assists while MMA held the rebounding advantage 35-31.
MMA had 13 steals and scored 26 points off of turnovers.
