Maine Maritime Academy honors student-athletes
The Maine Maritime Academy athletic department recognized and celebrated the achievements of Mariner student-athletes at their "Athletic Awards Night" on campus in Castine. Sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Athletic Director Jim Dyer and Senior Women's Administrator Katrina Dagan presided over the evening's festivities. In total, there were 47 scholar-athlete award winners recognized at the event including 5 dual sport athletes. To be recognized as a Mariner scholar-athlete a student needs to be on the Dean's list academically, and have participated in a varsity sport.

MMA Female Athlete of the Year - Chelsea Ward. Chelsea helped lead the Lady Mariner Women's Volleyball team to a 22-6 record, a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) championship, and a third straight berth to the NCAA Tournament. The sophomore from Homer, Alaska was a North Atlantic Conference 1st team selection, was the NAC tournament Most Outstanding Player, and was honored as the North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year. Ward led the NAC in and was nationally ranked in attack percentage.

MMA Male Athlete of the Year - Jim Bower. Jim helped the Mariner football team to a 9-2 record, a NEFC Championship, and the program's first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. Bower was a NEFC 1st Team All-Conference selection, the NEFC Bogan Division Offensive Player of the Year, and an All-New England DII/DIII selection. Bower was also honored by the Gridiron Club of Boston, winning the Joseph Zabilski Award as the DII/DIII Player of the Year. He was the winner of the Boston Globe New England Gold Helmet Player of the Year as well as being named a D3football.com All-American. The Associated Press named the running back and All-American and the American Football Coaches Association also named Bower to their All-American Team.

In addition, 10 MMA student-athletes were recognized as North Atlantic Conference All-Academic Selections: Kelsi Eiane, Women's Basketball/Soccer; Amy Young, Volleyball; Katherine McMillan, Volleyball; Jaymie Frederick, Volleyball; Lucas Miller, Men's Cross Country; Lacey Jackson, Women's Soccer; Katie Hutchinson, Women's Soccer/Basketball; Joe MulCahy, Men's Basketball; Jarred Sternberg, Men's Basketball, and Omar Chaar, Men's Soccer;. To achieve this honor each student athlete must have played their sport for at least two seasons, have junior or senior status, and have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average.

The Mariner football team had seven New England Football Conference All-Academic Selections: Todd Murphy, Travis Fergola, Josh Elwell, Nick Bourassa, Chris Brawn, Nate Duford, and Wade Mondoux were selected for this honor.

During the 2009-2010 athletic slate, the Mariners had 35 All-Conference Selections, three conference Players of the Year (Rachel Sincebaugh, Chelsea Ward, Jim Bower), two conference Rookies of the Year (Callie Thompson and Andrew DiSalvo), two Sportsmanship Awards (Men's XC ans Men's Soccer), two Coaches of the Year (Travers Evans and Katrina Dagan), two NCAA Tournament teams (Volleyball and Football), two All-Region selections (Jim Bower and Travis Fergola), and one All-American (Jim Bower).
