MMA's Stifling Defense Sinks Eagles

February 12th, 2011 – (Poultney, Vt.) – Maine Maritime Academy limited Green Mountain College to just eight second half points on 16.7 percent shooting en route to a 67-27 victory in North Atlantic Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon.

 

Maritime (14-9, 8-4) opened the game on a 14-1 lead capped by a Courtney Dufour (Augusta, Maine) three and never looked back.  The Mariners, who out-rebounded Green  Mountain 63-36 including 31 on the offensive end, led by as many as 20 in the opening stanza before settling for a 35-19 halftime lead.

 

MMA turned up the defensive pressure over the final 20 minutes, limiting the hosts to just four field goals (4-for-24) and collecting 11 of their 32 points off turnovers.  Samantha Goda (Eliot, Maine) was the games' leading scorer with 11 points while Leah Jackson (Dedham, Maine) narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 19 boards for Maine Maritime.  Ten other Mariners found their way onto the score-sheet including Casey McCloskey (Howland, Maine) who finished the night with nine points and a 2-for-4 effort from beyond the arc.

 

Green Mountain was led by Millicent Hopper (Gouverneur, N.Y.) with seven points, 12 boards and a block while Jacque Caster (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) chipped in eight points.
