Maine Maritime Academy honors student-athletes
The Maine Maritime Academy athletic department recognized and celebrated the achievements of Mariner student-athletes at their "Athletic Awards Night" on campus in Castine. Sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Athletic Director Eric Sabean and Senior Women's Administrator Katrina Dagan presided over the evening's festivities. In total, there were 66 scholar-athlete award winners recognized at the event. To be recognized as a Mariner scholar-athlete a student needs to be on the Dean's list academically, and have participated in a varsity sport.

The MMA athletic department announced the creation of a new award for the 2011 event that recognizes a senior scholar athlete from a men's and women's team. Maine Maritime Academy Senior Student-Athlete Awards go to one male and one female senior athlete. Recipients must have demonstrated excellence in both the classroom and in their respective sports during their careers at Maine Maritime Academy and the award also takes into consideration their leadership, sportsmanship and community engagement.

MMA Female Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year - Katie Hutchinson 

Katie is a International Business and Logistics Major and made the Dean's List 7 out of 7 semesters. She was four year member of the women's soccer and basketball teams and served as captain for both squads. She was a SGA Secretary, a Member of SCOR and CSCPM, and a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Katie is an All-Academic Team Member in Basketball and Soccer for the North Atlantic Conference and a 3-time all conference player in soccer for the North Atlantic Conference.

MMA Male Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year - Todd Murphy 

Todd is a International Business and Logistics Major and made the Dean's List 7 out of 7 semesters. He was a four year member of both the football and men's lacrosse teams and a Captain of both the football and men's lacrosse teams in 2010-2011. He is a member of the New England Football Conference All-Academic Team and an All-AcademicTeam Member for Lacrosse in the North Atlantic Conference. Todd is a Student Member of SCOR / Supply Chain Council and a Member of the Journal of Commerce.

MMA Female Athlete of the Year - Samantha Goda. 

Sam was named a NAC 1st Team All-Conference selection for the second year in a row and was the first Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-State selection in four years for the Lady Mariners. Sam led the Lady Mariners in scoring, rebounding, blocks, steals, and took a program record 57 charges this year.  Sam finished the year with 343 points and 222 rebounds. Sam has moved into 6th on the all-time rebound list and 8th on the all-time scoring list for the Lady Mariners.

 

MMA Male Athlete of the Year - Jim Bower. 

Jim was named the NEFC Bogan Division Offensive Player of the Year and was selected to the Bogan Division First Team. He was named the ECAC North Offensive Player of the Year and was once again selected to the American Football Coaches All-American Team.  The senior back was also selected to the New England Football Writers DII/DIII All-Star Team as well as being selected as a D3football.com All-Region selection.Bower broke numerous school records and finished his career in 6th place on the NCAA DIII Career Rushing Yards list with 6,060 yards.The senior fullback rushed for 1,916 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2010. He led the nation in rushing with 174.2 rushing yards per game and averaged a guady 7.8 yards per carry.



In addition, 10 MMA student-athletes were recognized as North Atlantic Conference All-Academic Selections: Katie Hutchinson, Women's Soccer; Jenna King, Volleyball; Kayley Rodriguez, Women's Basketball/Volleyball; Jaymie Frederick, Volleyball; Megan Russell, Women's Soccer/Softball; Lucas Miller, Men's Cross Country; Luke Nielson, Golf; Sean Ferris, Golf, Todd Murphy, Men's Lacrosse; and Wade Mondoux, Men's Lacrosse. To achieve this honor each student athlete must have played their sport for at least two seasons, have junior or senior status, and have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average.



The Mariner football team had seven New England Football Conference All-AcademicSelections: Todd Murphy, Timothy Shea, Jonathan Thoms, Nick Bourassa, Chris Brawn, Nate Duford, and Wade Mondoux were selected for this honor.



During the 2010-2011 athletic slate, the Mariners had 36 All-Conference Selections, four conference Players of the Year (Matt Methot, Chelsea Ward, Jim Bower, and Andrew DiSalvo), two conference Rookies of the Year (Tom Houle and Melissa Lail), two Coaches of the Year (Katrina Dagan in Softball and Vollleyball), one NCAA Tournament teams (Volleyball), and one All-American (Jim Bower).
