Beacons Escape Mariners in Double Overtime

TAVERNIER, FLA. -- UMass-Boston outscored Maine Maritime 13-4 in the second overtime to escape with a 69-60 win in  the first game of the Key Largo Classic Sunday. The Mariners fell to 3-4 while the Beacons improved to 8-2.

MMA returns to action Monday against Elmira at 3 p.m.

Mary Badeen, making her MMMA debut, netted a team-high 17 points and added 11 rebounds to record her first collegiate double-double. Courtney Dufour and Alexis Bennett added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Mariners while Leah Jackson and Bekah Campbell pulled down 11 and 10 rebounds. 

Four players reached double figures for the Beacons led by Olivia Murphy's game-high 20. Lauren Perra (16 points), Kirsten Morrison (14) and Teresa Pina (11) also hit double digits for UMB. Morrison added 24 rebounds, and Murphy pulled down 15 boards, to earn double-doubles.

Murphy's layup to begin the second overtime gave the Beacons the lead for good, 58-56, and sparked the Beacons' 13-4 scoring run.

Trailing 51-47 in the opening two minutes of the first overtime, the Mariners answered with a three from Badeen and a free throw by Jackson to even the game with 3:27 left.  A jumper from Bennett put MMA ahead 53-51, with three minutes left, but the Beacons responded with three straight points to go ahead 54-53 with 1:04 remaining. Bennett sank a pair of free throws, and Badeen one, to give the Mariners a 56-54 lead with 30 seconds left before Murphy made a layup 10 seconds later to even the game and send it into another period.

The Mariners saw a five point halftime deficit, 25-20, inflate to 13 with 15:56 left in the game, 36-23. MMA answered with a 20-7 scoring run over the next 12 minutes -- which started with a Badeen free throw and ended with a Campbell layup --  to even the game at 43-43 with 3:02 left. The Beacons went ahead 45-43, with 46 seconds left, before four straight points from Badeen gave the Mariners a 47-45 advantage with 31 seconds left in the game. Pina tied the game for the ninth time with a layup with 17 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
