Maine Maritime Academy

2012 SAAC Awards Banquet

2012 SAAC Awards Night

4/17/2012 12:00:00 AM

Maine Maritime Academy honored its student-athletes at its Annual Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Awards Reception in the Alfond Student Center on the evening of Tuesday, April 17. Kayley Rodriguez and Nick Bourassa were honored as the Outstanding Senior Scholar Athletes, while Andrew DiSalvo and Leah Jackson were named the Athletes of the Year for 2011-2012.

A Marine Engineering Technology major with a 3.62 grade point average (GPA), Bourassa is a three-time New England Football Conference (NEFC) All-Academic Team selection. The team captain was also a three-time All-NEFC selection, earning First Team honors as a junior. He averaged 9.6 yards per carry and 70.7 yards per game in his career, scoring 37 touchdowns over land, including a 96-yard jaunt that tied the school record for longest rush from scrimmage. He also returned a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown in his career. This season, Bourassa was named the NEFC Player of the Week on September 18 and was selected by the Maine Maritime Athletic Department as the Mariner of the Month in September.

Rodriguez was a four-year member of both the volleyball and basketball teams. The four-time NAC All-Academic selection is a Marine Biology major sporting a 3.63 GPA, and was recently accepted into the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois. The volleyball team captain was a member of three North Atlantic Conference Championship teams. She finished her career fourth in digs (5950), fifth in assists (163), and seventh in points (503.5).

DiSalvo is the first lacrosse player to earn Athlete of the Year honors at Maine Maritime. The senior registered his 100th career goal and assist this season, and is three points away from becoming the all-time leading point scorer in MMA's history. He is the only Mariner ever to reach 100 assists in a career. A two-time NAC Player of the Year and the 2009 NAC Rookie of the Year, DiSalvo was named the NAC Player of the Week on April 2nd, and was the Mariner of the Month in March.

Jackson is a member of both the softball and basketball teams at Maine Maritime. On the hardwood, she averaged 10.2 rebounds and 6.2 points per game, leading the Mariners to the NAC Semifinals, where they were upended by the eventual champions, Castleton State.  Jackson was selected as the Mariner of the Month in January. On the diamond, the 2011 NAC Defensive Player of the Year has caught over half of the 23 runners who tested the backstop's arm.  A two-time All-NAC First Team choice, Jackson owns a .364 batting average with a team-best eight doubles. Her 18 RBIs are second on the team. She has drawn nine walks and has an on-base percentage of .450 percent. She also owns a .652 slugging percentage.

Maine Maritime also honored its All-Conference and Academic All-Conference Award winners, its athletes recognized by the CoSIDA/CapitalOne Academic All-America program, its SAAC Executive Board, its 82 athletes with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, the Mariners of the Month, and its 28 seniors who earned four varsity letters.

The CoSIDA/CapitalOne Academic All-America program is the most distinguished and exclusive awards program honoring the absolute best and brightest in college sports.
