Maine Maritime Finishes Second at Pepsi Challenge

CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime women's basketball team overcame a 10-point first half, with 28 points in the second, but it wasn't enough as Mount Holyoke held on for a 51-38 win in the Mariner Pepsi Challenge Championship game Saturday. The Lyons improved to 2-0, while the Mariners dropped to 1-1.

Bates beat Simmons 84-55 in the consolation game.

Amber Legare was named the tournament MVP and teammate Kate Karraker was named to the All-Tournament team for MHC. Jillian Perron and Hannah Lyons were named to the All-Tournament for Maine Maritime as were Kim Hixon (Simmons) and Meredith Kelly (Bates).

Four players reached double figures for the Lyons with Legare and Jennine Vizcaino each scoring 12 points, Genelle Green added 11 and Karraker 10. Legare and Nicole DeMarchena both pulled down nine rebounds.

Cheyenne Malloy came off the bench to lead the Mariners with nine points. The freshman was 3 of 9 from behind the arc and pulled down five boards. Kari Jones added eight points and five rebounds and Ashley Shine had a team-high six rebounds.

It was all Lyons in the first half as they jumped out to a 21-2 lead on a three from Karraker with 6:34 left. Legare made it 26-5 with a jump shot at 4:28 before the Mariners scored the next five -- on a three from Malloy and layup by Alex Winchester -- to make it 28-10 with 1:11 left in the first. Vizcaino's three late in the half gave MHC a 31-10 halftime lead.

Mount Holyoke held a the lead early in the half and led 41-25 after a Legare layup with 7:28 left in the game. Maine Maritime used an 11-4 scoring run in the next two minutes to close the gap to 43-36 on a Shine layup with 4:40 left in the game. Jones and Mackenzie Vosburgh both netted two points in the run and Malloy added another three.

The score remained the same over the next four minutes before the Lyons iced the game by converting 6 of 6 free throws in the final 28 seconds.

The Mariners return to action Tuesday, 7 p.m., hosting Maine-Machias.
