GAME NOTES: Maine Maritime Academy at Nichols College

Saturday's Game: Maine Maritime Academy (2-6, NEFC 1-5) at Nichols College (1-8, NEFC 0-6), 12:00 p.m., Vendetti Field, Dudley, Mass.

Series History: The Mariners are 20-17 against the Bison, including three-straight wins, in a rivalry that dates back to 1959. In the last five meetings at Nichols, the Bison hold a 4-1 record over the Mariners.

Last Meeting: Jacob Doolan (Fairfield, Maine) amassed 206 yards on the ground and scored three times on 12 carries while adding two catches for a total of 63 yards, and a touchdown to lead the Mariners to a 62-43 NEFC victory over Nichols College last season.

The Mariners finished the afternoon with 604 yards of total offense (459 rush, 145 pass) and scored touchdowns on nine of their first 12 possessions. Jeddy Doyon (Hampden, Maine) led the Mariners with 19 tackles (13 solo) and the Mariner defense pressured Nichols quarterback Bryan Hummel into four turnovers (three interceptions, one fumble).

Collin Joyce (Westbrook, Maine) recorded 10 total tackles (three solo), while Joshua Hall added a sack and two tackles for a loss. Michael Burgess (North Yarmouth, Maine) also picked up two tackles for a loss in addition to his three solo tackles.

Brett McEvoy (14 tackles; six solo) and Orlando Vega (10 tackles; three solo) led the Nichols defense. McEvoy, along with Chris Zuloaga, Jonathan Winbush and Brian Jones, each recovered a fumble.

Maine Maritime Academy's Last Game: James Ferrar (Cumberland, Maine) led Maine Maritime Academy with 101 rushing yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns as the Mariners fell to Salve Regina University last weekend, 49-14 in New England Football Conference action.

The Seahawks scored on their opening possession, putting together an 8-play 64-yard drive, resulting in a Sam Pascale 2-yard touchdown run. Andrew Verre's extra point was good, putting Salve Regina ahead 7-0.

Both teams went three-and-out on their next drives, before the Mariners orchestrated a 10-play 85-yard drive, capped off with a 5-yard touchdown run by Ferrar, and a Chad Martin (Fairfield, Maine) extra point, to tie things up at 7-7.

Salve Regina responded with 21 points in both the second and third quarters to take a 49-7 lead into the fourth. Johnny Weymouth (Windham, Maine) recovered a fumble to give the Mariners excellent field position at the Seahawk's 12-yard line. Ferrar added his second touchdown of the day, this time a one-yard run, followed by another Martin extra point to close the deficit to 49-14 in the fourth quarter.

The Seahawks hung out to take the victory, improving to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the New England Football Conference, while the Mariners fall to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in NEFC play.

Quarterback Michael Fahey (Union, Conn.) accounted for 79 of the Mariners' 258 rushing yards, on 19 carries, and Jacob Doolan added 63 yards on nine carries, including a long run of 28 yards.

Defensively Cody Chapman (Bangor, Maine) led the Mariners with nine tackles (5 solo), including two tackles for a loss. Justin Lovely (West Gardiner, Maine) and Zachary Faskianos (York, Maine) added eight tackles each, and Faskianos added 2.5 tackles for a loss and a sack.

Nichols College's Last Game: The Bison fell to MIT 21-11 last weekend. Andre Rickerson led the team with a season-high 97 yards on 23 carries.

Nichols took an 11-7 lead into the fourth, but Michael McCourt tossed his third interception of the game in the fourth quarter. On the ensuing possession, Adis Ojeda picked up 30 yards on four plays, he final five of which carried him into the end zone, to extend the MIT lead to 21-11.

Brett McEvoy led the Bison with 13 tackles (eight solo), including three tackles for loss. Freshman Brendan Massey tallied 35 receiving yards to lead Nichols.

The Mariners: Maine Maritime Academy averages 408.3 yards per game, including 330.3 rushing yards and 78 passing yards. The Mariners are averaging 21.4 points per game, while allowing opponents to score 38.4 points per game.

Quarterback Michael Fahey leads the team with 555 passing yards, and four touchdowns, and Derek Breunig (Westbrook, Maine) leads the team with 10 receptions for 227 yards and three touchdowns. James Ferrar leads the rushing attack with 844 yards on 146 carries and five touchdowns. Ferrar leads the team in all-purpose yards, averaging 105.5 yards per game.

Defensively, Jeddy Doyon leads the team with 63 total tackles, including 28 solo tackles and three tackles for a loss. Robert Bradley, Jr. (Slidell, La.) leads the team with three sacks, and Michael Burgess leads the team with 10.5 tackles for a loss and five blocked kicks.

The Bison: Nichols College averages 264.6 yards per game, including 99.1 rushing yards and 165.44 passing yards. The Bison average 15.78 points per game, while allowing opponents to average 32 points per game.

Michael McCourt leads the team with 1,260 passing yards on 99 completions and 11 touchdowns. Grant Klimek leads the team with 417 rushing yards, and five touchdowns, while Derrick Warren leads the team with 627 receiving yards on 30 receptions and six touchdowns.

Defensively, Brett McEvoy leads the Bison with 82 total tackles, including 46 solo tackles and 13.5 tackles for a loss. William Contois leads the team with 4.5 sacks.

NCAA Rankings: The Mariners rank 3rd in the NCAA DIII in rushing offense with an average of 330.3 yards per game, and 24th in time of possession. (33:00). Michael Burgess ranks 2nd in the NCAA DIII this season with five blocked kicks,

Conference Rankings: James Ferrar ranks third in the NEFC with 105.5 rushing yards per game, while Michael Fahey ranks fourth in the NEFC with eight rushing touchdowns.

Nichols' Michael McCourt ranks fifth in the conference with 157.5 passing yards per game, and fourth in passing touchdowns (11). Derrick Warren ranks third in the conference with 69.7 receiving yards per game, and is tied for third in the conference with six receiving touchdowns. William Contois ranks fourth in the NEFC with 4.5 sacks.

Regular Season Finale: In the past five seasons, the Mariners are 1-4 in their final game of the regular season. The Bison are 0-5 in their final regular season game, over the last five seasons.
