Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime women's basketball fell to UMass Boston, 55-37 on Sunday afternoon in the Pepsi Mariner Challenge Championship game.
The Beacons held a slight advantage for most of the game, but the Mariners outscored UMass Boston 9-3, late in the third quarter to cut the deficit to just three points. The visitors answered back with eight-straight points to close out the quarter, and entered the fourth with a 43-32 lead.
The Mariners cut the lead to eight with a little over five minutes remaining in the game, following three points from Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine), but the Beacons tallied eight unanswered points in the final minutes of the game, including going 4-for-7 from the line, to take the 55-37 win.
Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) tallied a team-leading 17 points and 10 boards to lead Maine Maritime en route to All-Tournament honors, while McLean added seven points and seven boards to also earn an All-Tournament nod.
Tournament MVP Olivia Murphy led the Beacons with a game-high 18 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks, while Taje Burston was named to the All-Tournament team, following an 11 point, five assist and three rebound performance. Raven Kelsey and Ariana Rivera added nine points each in the win for UMass Boston.
The Mariners fall to 1-1 on the season and will host Saint Joseph's next Saturday, November 21 while the Beacons improve to 2-0 and will host Framingham State also on Saturday.
