Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy Women's Basketball defeated Colby-Sawyer College on Friday night, 62-56, inside of Smith Gymnasium in North Atlantic Conference play.
The Mariners fought back from an early 11-point deficit following two threes and a jumper from Mackenzie Vosburgh (Rhinebeck, N.Y.), and a three-pointer from Mary Badeen (Newport, Maine), to take a 24-22 lead with two minutes remaining in the half. Kristi Willey (Topsham, Maine) sunk a three-pointer to put the Mariners up 27-23 with 45 seconds remaining and a pair of free throws from the Chargers closed the Mariner led to 27-25 entering halftime.
Colby-Sawyer tied the score at 27-27 with 17:29 remaining in the game, but the Mariners never relinquished the lead in the second half, shooting a perfect 18-18 from the line. The Chargers tied it up at 41-41 with 5:53 remaining but the Mariners responded with a combined nine-unanswered points from Willey and Badeen to take a commanding 50-41 lead with a little over two minutes left.
The Chargers were efficient from behind the arc in the closing minutes, scoring all of there last 15 points on three-pointers, but the Mariners were strong from the line, and hung on to claim the 62-56 victory.
Badeen ended the evening with a game-high 16 points, including a perfect 8 for 8 from the line, nine rebounds, and three assists, while Vosburgh picked up 14 points, three assists, a rebound and steal, and Willey contributed 13 points, a team-best four assists, four rebounds and a steal.
Kelsey Cahill and Katie McCarthy led the Chargers with 15 points each, while Jessica Shenkel added 12 points.
The Mariners improve to 9-11 overall and 6-7 in NAC play while the Chargers fall to 11-9 overall and 8-5 in the conference.
Maine Maritime moves on to host another tough NAC opponent, New England College tomorrow at 3:00 p.m., while the Chargers travel to face Husson. also at 3:00 p.m.
