GAME NOTES: Maine Maritime Academy vs. Coast Guard Academy

Saturday's Game: Maine Maritime Academy (1-2, NEFC 0-1) vs. Coast Guard Academy (2-2, NEFC 1-0), 12:00 p.m., Ritchie Field.

Series History: The Mariners are 5-7 all-time against Coast Guard Academy. When hosting, the Mariners are 2-3 against the Bears.

Last Meeting: The Mariners and Bears met last season on October 18 at Ritchie Field. Maine Maritime took a 13-7 win over Coast Guard, forcing five Bear turnovers in the second half. Cody McDonald, Collin Joyce, and Andrew Cavanaugh all grabbed interceptions for the Mariners, while Michael Burgess forced a fumble.

Quarterback Michael Fahey led the Mariner offense with 99 rushing yards, and a touchdown, while Jacob Doolan added 60 yards on 16 carries.

McDonald recorded seven total tackles, including one tackle for a loss and an interception. Jeddy Doyon and Robert Bradley Jr., also added seven total tackles each for the Mariners.

Derek Victory led the Bear offense with 213 passing yards and the lone touchdown.

Coast Guard's Kyle Wood recorded a game-high 15 tackles, followed by Victor Rizzardi with 13 total tackles.

Maine Maritime Academy Last Week: Maine Maritime Academy football amassed 494 yards of total offense, led by 165 passing yards and 61 rushing yards from senior quarterback Michael Fahey in a 51-26 New England Football Conference loss on Saturday afternoon.

Ferrar led the Mariners' rushing attack with 144 yards on 31 carries and a touchdown, while Joshua Doolan added 89 yards on nine carries and a touchdown, and 19 receiving yards.

Jeddy Doyon led the Mariner defense with seven tackles, including one for a loss, while both Lovely and Cody Gibbons grabbed interceptions with 35 yard and 14 yard returns respectively, and Alex Gamester and Michael Burgess added sacks.

Coast Guard Academy Last Week: Senior Tyler Henning 's 37-yard field goal with three seconds left gave Coast Guard a 21-20 win over Salve Regina.

Jordan Groff led the Bears with six receptions for 36 yards and also was the team's leading rusher with six carries for 24 yards.

Senior cornerback Eli Maurer led the Bears defense with eight tackles; one solo and a team-high three pass breakups while senior linebacker Kyle Wood and Mark Behne each finished with seven tackles.

The Mariners: James Ferrar leads the Mariners with an average of 107.7 rushing yards per game and 323 total rushing yards. Michael Fahey has 337 passing yards on 17 completions and three touchdowns, and 253 rushing yards on 71 carriers and two touchdowns. Jordan Susi, Derek Breunig and Jordan Talbot all have a touchdown catch, while Susi leads the wide receivers with 160 total yards on eight receptions.

Defensively Jeddy Doyon leads the Mariner defense with 26 tackles, while Michael Burgess has a team-leading two sacks and Justin Lovely has a team-best two interceptions.

Maine Maritime averages 24.3 points per game, while allowing opponents to score 40.7 points per game. The Mariners average 340 rushing yards per game, and 5.6 yards per rush, while averaging 112.3 passing yards per game and 8 yards per completion. On the ground, Mike Clancy leads the team with 131 rushing yards on 39 carries and two touchdowns.

The Bears: Quarterback Derek Victory has 774 yards on 80 completions and three touchdowns. Jordan Groff leads the Bear receivers with 22 receptions for 189 yards and a touchdown, while Carter Provost has 205 yards on just 14 catches.

Joe Rizzardi leads the Bear defense with 34 tackles over four games, and Brendan McNeil leads the team with 3.5 tackles for a loss.

Coast Guard Academy averages 20.5 points per game, while allowing opponents to score 20 points per game. Offensively the Bears average 61.8 rushing yards per game, and 2.4 yards per rush, while averaging 193.5 passing yards per game and 5.4 yards per completion.

Block City: In each of the last two games for the Mariners, Michael Burgess has blocked an extra-point kick attempt on the opponent's first touchdown of the game. With those two blocks, Burgess now has 14 career blocked kicks, a Maine Maritime Academy school record.

Special Teams Stars: Two weeks ago Mariner kicker Chad Martin was named the New England Football Conference Co-Special Teams Player of the Week following the win against Mass. Maritime, this week Coast Guard's kicker Tyler Henning grabbed the honor.

Lovely Island: In each of the last two games for the Mariners, Justin Lovely has recorded an interception. Against Mass. Maritime the senior returned an interception for 50 yards and last week against MIT the defensive back returned an interception for 35 yards.

Career Completions: During last week's game at MIT, senior quarterback Michael Fahey completed a career-high 12 passes. 

Campbell Trophy: Senior linebacker Jeddy Doyon has been named one of 135 semifinalists for the 2015 William V. Campbell Trophy, presented by Fidelity Investments® and prominently displayed inside its official home at the New York Athletic Club, which recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.

Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the awards must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. 

The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, which is comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers and athletics administrators.

Halftime Ceremony: During halftime of Saturday's game, North Atlantic Conference Commissioner Julie Muller will be in attendance to recognize the 2014-15 NAC Man of the Year, Nicholas Betti a 2015 Men's Lacrosse Captain and May 2015 Graduate.

Catholic Joins NEWMAC in 2017: On Tuesday the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference announced the addition of the Catholic University of America as an associate member in the sport of football, effective July 1, 2017.  

With the addition, NEWMAC football will be comprised of conference members MIT, Springfield College, WPI and the United States Coast Guard Academy along with Catholic, Norwich University, Maine Maritime Academy and the United States Merchant Marine Academy as associate members.
