Box Score HENNIKER, N.H. – Maine Maritime Academy cruised to a 56-45 victory over New England College on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference play.
With a block in the second quarter, Bekah Campbell (Corinth, Maine) now holds the Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball record for the most career blocks (169).
Following a slow offensive start for both teams, Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) hit a pair of free throws to give the Mariners a 5-4 lead midway through the first quarter. At 2:06 Tess Clark (Spring, Texas) capitalized on a three-point play to give the Mariners a 10-6 advantage. Mikayla Charters (Newport, Maine) made a free throw and Felix added a layup to close out the quarter giving the Mariners a 13-7 lead.
Maine Maritime held the Pilgrims scoreless for the opening three minutes of the second quarter, building an 11-point lead and holding onto that advantage to enter the intermission.
The Mariners led by as much as 13 points in the third quarter, following a Charters layup at 4:41, but the Pilgrims began to chip away at the deficit, closing the gap to just five points with 2:37 to go. Alex Winchester (Hampden, Maine) sank a three-pointer to put the Mariners back up by eight, and Clark added three points to send Maine Maritime into the final quarter with a 41-32 lead.
The Pilgrims closed the deficit to six points twice in the fourth quarter, but the Mariners outscored New England College 9-4 to close out the game.
Felix scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Mariners, while also pulling down six rebounds and dishing out an assist. Clark ended the afternoon with eight points and five rebounds, and Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine) added seven points, two rebounds and two assists.
Tiffany Davis scored 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead New England College with a double-double.
The Mariners improve to 11-7 and 7-4 in the NAC, while the Pilgrims fall to 12-7 overall and 6-6 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action next Friday, February 5, when they host Johnson State at 5:30 pm.
