GAME NOTES: Maine Maritime Academy vs. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Saturday's Game: Maine Maritime Academy (1-1, 0-0) vs. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (0-3, 0-0), Ritchie Field, Castine, Maine, 12:00 p.m.

Conference Openers: Over the last six seasons the Mariners are 1-5 in conference openers, while MIT is 2-4. The Engineers grabbed their last NEFC opener win last season against the Mariners, while the Mariners' last conference opening win came in 2011 against Mass.-Dartmouth.

Series History: The Engineers hold a 4-0 all-time record over the Mariners. The first-ever meeting between the two teams came in 2008, with the Engineers taking a narrow 42-39 victory in Portland, Maine. The two teams have since met each of the last three years.

Last Meeting: Maine Maritime Academy football amassed 494 yards of total offense, led by 165 passing yards and 61 rushing yards from senior quarterback Michael Fahey in the 51-26 New England Football Conference loss on September 26, 2015.

James Ferrar led the Mariners' rushing attack with 144 yards on 31 carries and a touchdown, while Joshua Doolan added 89 yards on nine carries and a touchdown, and 19 receiving yards.

Quarterback John King hit 13-of-17 passes for 166 yards and three scores for the Engineers, while Karson Ota ended with 108 receiving yards, and Jared Hanson added 100 receiving yards on seven catches.

Jeddy Doyon led the Mariner defense with seven tackles, including one for a loss, while both Justin Lovely and Cody Gibbons grabbed interceptions with 35 yard and 14 yard returns respectively, and Alex Gamester and Michael Burgess added sacks.

Ben Boldt led MIT's defense with nine tackles, including five solo stops and a tackle for a loss, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

Maine Maritime Last Week: Junior Jacob Doolan rushed for 154 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown from nine yards out with 19 seconds remaining to lift Maine Maritime to a 42-35 victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the 44th Annual Admiral's Cup contest played last Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

A game that saw the visiting Mariners jump out to a 21-0 lead with 6:05 to play at the half turned into a 35-34 advantage for the host Buccaneers just 1:44 into the fourth quarter, as Maine Maritime converted a trio of fourth downs during the 17-play, 87-yard game-winning drive, which Doolan capped with a successful two-point conversion rush.

Creeger amassed 208 yards of total offense and accounted for five total touchdowns in the triumph for Maine Maritime, which has now won two straight in the Admiral's Cup series for the first time since 2009-10. Five of Creeger's six completed passes (on 10 attempts for 144 yards) were hauled in by Susi (129 receiving yards), while Doolan averaged 7.3 yards on 21 carries to go with his score. Junior James Ferrar (Cumberland, Maine) added 130 yards on 20 carries for the Mariners, who amassed 497 yards overall in outrushing the hosts by a 353-82 margin.

Senior Christopher Ford paced Maine Maritime defensively with 10 total tackles, including six solo stops and four for losses of 14 yards, while junior Zachary Faskianos also recorded 10 tackles for the Mariners, who also received an interception from freshman Trenton J. Bouchard.

MIT Last Week: Massachusetts Institute of Technology dropped a 31-10 final to visiting RPI on Saturday.

MIT had the advantage in the passing game as Udgam Goyal completed 18 passes for 200 yards, as the Engineers owned a 19-18 edge in first downs. The Engineers held a 243-141 advantage on the ground behind a 85-yard effort from John Robertson, on 26 attempts. MIT's leading receiver was freshman Eric Bradford with six catches for 69 yards.

Defensively for MIT, junior Mitch Turley was the top tackler with nine stops on the day that included five solo tackles.

The Mariners: Corey Creeger leads the Mariners with 133.5 passing yards per game, while also leading the team with six rushing touchdowns. Jordan Susi leads the Mariners with 80 receiving yards per game and two receiving touchdowns. James Ferrar leads the team with 105.5 rushing yards per game and Jacob Doolan averages 102.5 rushing yards per game.

Defensively, Zachary Faskianos leads the team with nine tackles per game and Cody Chapman leads the team with 1.5 sacks.

After two games, the Mariners are averaging 309 rushing yards per game and 133.5 passing yards per game. Against Maine Maritime, opponents are averaging 228.5 passing yards per game and 140 rushing yards per game. The Mariners are allowing opponents to score 35 points per game, while also averaging 35 points per game.

The Engineers: After three games, the Engineers are averaging 217 passing yards per game and 101 rushing yards per game. Against MIT, opponents are averaging 143.3 passing yards per game and 204.7 rushing yards per game. The Engineers are allowing opponents to score 28.3 points per game, while averaging 18 points per game.

High Honors: Following last Saturday's game, senior defensive tackle Christopher Ford was named the New England Football Conference (NEFC) Defensive Player of the Week. Teammates Trenton Bouchard and Corey Creeger were named to the NEFC Defensive and Offensive Honor Rolls, respectively.

Ford was also named to the D3football.com Team of the Week at the defensive tackle position.

Productive Start: The Mariners have scored first in their last three games, stretching all the way to last season's finale against Nichols.

In last Saturday's game against Massachusetts Maritime, the Mariners scored on their first two-drives.

NEFC Rankings: Corey Creeger currently ranks atop the NEFC with six rushing touchdowns. Christopher Ford ranks second in the NEFC with an average of 2.5 tackles for a loss per game. The Mariners rank first in the NEFC in rushing offense with 309 rushing yards per game.

William J. Mottola Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2016: On Friday, Maine Maritime Athletics will welcome Peter Scontras (Football, Class of 1950), Claude Leclair (Football, Class of 1986), Stacey (Ryan) Sangillo (Basketball, Softball and Soccer, Class of 2002) and Corey Streams (Basketball, Class of 2002) into the William J. Mottola Athletics Hall of Fame.

Scontras, the starting running back for Coach John Hoctor, scored the first-ever touchdown on Ritchie Field on a 65-yard run. Scontras was assigned all kicking duties and even occasionally threw passes for the football team. After Maine Maritime Academy, Scontras was rated one of the top five runners over 65, in New England.

Leclair was named to the NEFC All-Conference team, while also earning All-New England and Pizza Hut DIII All-American accolades. Leclair still ranks 10th all-time in career rushing yards (2,414) and rushing touchdowns (21), while ranking seventh all-time with 92.8 rushing yards per game and 3.237 all purpose yards, as well as ranking in many other statistical categories.

Sangillo ranks fifth all-time in Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball history with 1,108 points, averaging a sixth best 12.3 points per game, and ranking in numerous career categories. As a softball player, Ryan ranks second all-time in on base percentage (.451) and fifth all-time with a .357 batting percentage. She also ranks third all-time in runs scored (83) and triples (6).

Streams is the all-time leader in field goals attempted and ranks second all-time in assists (327) and steals (181). Streams ranks fourth all-time in Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball history with 1,322 points, fifth all-time in field goals made (462), and fifth all-time in 3-point field goals made (517).
