GAME NOTES: Maine Maritime Academy at Coast Guard Academy

Saturday's Game: Maine Maritime Academy (1-2, 0-1 NEFC) at Coast Guard Academy (1-3, 0-1 NEFC), 1:30 p.m., New London, Conn.

Series History: Coast Guard leads 8-5. The Bears have won four of the last five meetings.

Last Meeting: Coast Guard's Mark Behne grabbed an interception in the end zone with 40 seconds left to lead the Bears to a 21-14 victory over Maine Maritime Academy, 21-14 in a New England Football Conference (NEFC) game on October 3, 2015.

The Mariners amassed 403 rushing yards, led by senior Michael Fahey who ran for 159 yards, and both of Maine Maritime's scores.

Following an exchange of punts to open the game, the Mariners drove 81 yards to the Coast Guard 2-yard line, but Fahey was stopped on 4th-and-1 by Ed Lazowski with 2:44 left in the opening quarter.

Fahey's 1-yard run with 12:46 left in the first half opened the scoring and freshman Chad Martin's kick gave the Mariners a 7-0 lead. Maine Maritime used the short field driving just 36 yards for the touchdown.

The Bears fumbled on the second play of their next possession and senior Michael Burgess recovered the ball for Maine Maritime at the Bear 32-yard line.

On a three play, 32-yard drive, Fahey scored on a 9-yard run and Martin's extra-point gave Maine Maritime at 14-0 lead with 10:45 left in the first half.

The Bears responded with a 10 play, 67-yard drive with Clancy scoring a 3-yard touchdown with 7:06 left in the half and senior Tyler Henning added the PAT to cut the deficit to 14-7.

Coast Guard recovered the ball on the ensuing kickoff to regain possession at the Maine Maritime 27-yard line. Derek Victory found Kyle Jackson for a 37-yard touchdown to tie things at 14-14.

The Mariners put together a 15-play 66-yard drive, setting up a 22-yard field goal from Martin, but the try was blocked by Coast Guard's Joe Rizzardi.

To start the fourth quarter, Will Daniels intercepted Fahey's pass and returned the ball 30 yards to the Maine Maritime 35-yard line, setting up a 8-play, 35-yard drive that was capped off by a 7-yard pass from Victory to Jordan Groff to give the visitors a 21-14 lead.

The Mariners built a 17-play, 84-yard drive with time winding down, but on a 4th-and-goal, Behne, picked off Fahey's pass to seal the victory for Coast Guard.

Kyle Wood led the Bears with 18 tackles, including nine solo stops, while Cody Chapman led the way defensively for the Mariners with eight total tackles, and Jeddy Doyon forced a fumble while adding four tackles.

Maine Maritime Academy Last Week: Maine Maritime lost to MIT 30-13 in the NEFC Opener. Jacob Doolan led the way with 107 rushing yards to lead Mariners while Cody Chapman led the defense with a career-high 17 tackles, including five for a loss totaling 13 yards and a forced fumble.

Coast Guard Academy Last Week: Senior Sam Pascale carried 21 times for 226 yards and four touchdowns and junior James Dawson had 203 total yards and two touchdowns leading Salve Regina to a 48-10 win over Coast Guard in the New England Football Conference (NEFC) opener for both teams on Saturday.

Salve Regina scored on five of its first six possessions and led 41-0 at halftime. The Seahawks had 456 yards in the first half (332 rushing) and finished with 601 total yards, 462 of those on the ground. Coast Guard which was held to 25 first half yards had 115 total yards in the game.

The Mariners: Maine Maritime's offense is led by Jacob Doolan's 104 rushing yards per game. Doolan is one of four players in the NEFC averaging over 100 yards per game. Doolan has carried 38 times for 312 yards and two touchdowns.

Maine Maritime is averaging 27.7 points and 380.3 yards per game, 271.3 yards on the ground and a league-low 109 passing yards per game.

Corey Creeger is 16-of-38 for 327 yards with three touchdowns and Jordan Susi leads the team with eight receptions for 183 yards and three touchdowns.

The Mariners are allowing opponents 33.3 points per game and 366.7 yards per game, 228.7 of those in the air.

Cody Chapman, the reigning NEFC Defensive Player of the Week, leads the team with 34 tackles, and 6.5 tackles for loss. He had 17 tackles including five for loss and forced a fumble on Saturday.

The Bears: Quarterback Derek Victory is 68-of-120 for 747 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception while sophomore Ethan Goldcamp is 36 of 71 for 496 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.

The Bears are averaging 26.5 points per game.

Wide receiver Kyle Jackson leads the Bears with 25 receptions for 241 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Cody Bain has 24 receptions for 310 yards and two touchdowns while junior Darius Adams has 12 receptions for a team-high 330 yards and a NEFC-high five touchdown receptions.

The Coast Guard defense is allowing 29.5 points and a NEFC-high 469.5 yards per game, a NEFC-high 283.8 of those on the ground and 185.8 in the air.

Ryan Robertson leads the team with 36 tackles, Matt O'Donnell has 24 hits on the season. Titus Creamer is third with 23 tackles and leads the team with five tackles for loss including a pair of sacks.

High Honors: Maine Maritime Academy's Cody Chapman was named the NEFC Defensive Player of the Week following his 17 tackle, five tackles for a loss and a forced fumble performance against MIT last week. On Tuesday, Chapman was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week at the linebacker position.

Chapman was just shy of breaking the Maine Maritime Academy single-game record for most tackles in a game, but tied for the all-time record of most tackles for a loss in a game.
