Box Score MILFORD, Mass. – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball cruised to a dominating 80-30 victory over Mount Holyoke College on Saturday afternoon in the opening game of the Curry College Tip-Off Tournament inside of Katz Gym.
With the victory the Mariners improve to 1-1 on the season and will play the winner of the Curry College vs. Pine Manor College matchup, tomorrow. The Lyons fall to 0-2 overall and will play the loser of that matchup.
The Mariners jumped out to a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Lyons tied the game up and took a brief 8-6 lead with 1:58 to play. Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine) used a three-point play to give the Mariners a 10-8 lead but the Lyons once again tied the game up at 10-10. Maine Maritime responded with five-straight points to close out the first quarter and dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Lyons 23-10, to take a 38-20 lead into halftime.
Maine Maritime picked up where they left off in the second half, holding Mount Holyoke to just 10 points in the final two quarters, cruising to the 80-30 victory.
Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) led the Mariners with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, and also added a steal. Emily Melick (Sudbury, Mass.) added 11 points, two steals and a rebound and McLean chipped in with nine points, seven steals, two rebounds and an assist and Morgan Boudreau (Benton, Maine) added a team-high 11 rebounds, and also contributed five points, two steals and two assists.
Katlyn Grover led Mount Holyoke with 11 points, one rebound and a steal and teammate GraceAnne Woods tallied a team-best nine rebounds and also added eight points and a steal.
The Mariners shot 43.6 percent from the floor, while the Lyons shot 18.8 percent. Maine Maritime also held a considerable advantage in rebounds, 64-28.
