Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball fell to Colby-Sawyer College 52-50 on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Smith Gymnasium.
The Mariners fall to 7-6 on the season and 3-4 in the conference, while the Chargers improve to 10-3 overall and 6-1 in the NAC. Maine Maritime returns to action on Friday, January 19 when they travel to Lyndon State College for a 5:30 pm NAC matchup.
The Chargers jumped out to a four-point lead midway through the first quarter, but the Mariners fought back and closed out the first 10 minutes on a five-point run to take a 13-8 lead into the second quarter.
The Mariners took a six-point lead in the second quarter following a Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) 3-pointer. The two teams exchanged scores until the Chargers took a two-point lead (20-18) at 5:45 on a three from Amanda Calvo. A layup from Amanda Holewiak (Somerset, Mass.) tied the game at 20-20 but the Chargers took a 26-24 lead into halftime.
Odgen led Maine Maritime in the first two quarters with seven points while Calvo and Tianna Sugars led the Chargers with seven points each.
The Mariners tied the game up twice early in the third quarter but the Chargers began to build a lead, and led by as much as seven twice. Morgan Boudreau (Benton, Maine) hit a layup in the final seconds of the third quarter to cut the Mariners' deficit to four (42-38).
Maine Maritime scored three-straight to open up the fourth quarter and closed the Chargers; lead to just one, but Lexie Hamilton made a pair from the line and Calvo made a layup to give the Chargers a 45-41 lead. Chloe Smedley (York, Maine) made back-to-back baskets for the Mariners to tie the game at 45-45 with 3:28 remaining.
The Chargers answered with three-straight points to retake a three-point lead with 2:27 to go. Odgen made a free throw and Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine) hit a pair of free throws to tie the game once again (48-48) with just under a minute to go.
Hamilton made both of her attempts at the line to put the Chargers ahead by two, but Felix tied the game with a layup with six seconds left. The Chargers went to the line twice in the final five seconds, making 2-of-4 to take the 52-50 victory.
Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) led the Mariners with 13 points, seven rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block while Smedley ended the afternoon with 10 points, eight rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Sugars led the Chargers with 13 points, three rebounds, one assist and a steal, while teammate Hamilton added 12 points, seven assists, six rebounds, and three steals. Emmani Robinson chipped in with 11 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals and Calvo contributed 10 points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal.
The Chargers shot 33.3 percent from the floor, while the Mariners shot 31.5 percent, but Maine Maritime held a 42-34 edge in rebounds.
