Box Score LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball defeated Lyndon State College 62-52 on Friday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Stannard Gymnasium.
With the victory the Mariners improve to 8-6 overall and 4-4 in conference play, while the Hornets drop to 9-6 on the season and 5-3 in the NAC. Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow at Johnson State in a 1:00 pm NAC matchup.
The two teams battled closely in the opening minutes of play, but the Hornets took their biggest lead of the game (20-10) late in the first quarter and held a 22-16 advantage after the first 10 minutes.
The Mariners fought back and held the Hornets scoreless for nearly the first seven minutes of play in the second quarter, and took a 31-29 lead into halftime.
After exchanging scores, the Mariners scored eight-unanswered points and built a 41-32 advantage. Lyndon closed the gap to three (42-39) with 34 seconds to go in the third quarter but Caitlin Kane (Wilton, Maine) added a free throw to send the Mariners into the final quarter with a 43-39 lead.
The Mariners continued to build their lead and led by as much as 12 points with 2:24 to play, on their way to the 62-52 victory.
Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) led the Mariners with 17 points, six rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block, while Kane contributed a season-high 15 points, six rebounds, three steals and an assist, and Chloe Smedley (York, Maine) added a season-high 13 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
Mikayla Hodge led the Hornets with a game-high 23 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and a steal and teammate Faith Poirier chipped in with 12 points and two rebounds.
The Mariners shot 40.7 percent from the floor, while the Hornets shot 36.5 percent from the floor. Lyndon held a 36-32 edge in rebounds.
