Women's Basketball Cruises to Victory Over Green Mountain

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball defeated Green Mountain College 80-40 on Friday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Smith Gymnasium.

With the win the Mariners improve to 11-6 on the season and 7-4 in NAC play, while the Eagles fall to 4-13 overall and 1-11 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow afternoon as they host Castleton University in a NAC matchup at 1:00 pm. 

The Mariners jumped out to a 7-0 lead, highlighted by five points from Caitlin Kane (Wilton, Maine), and took a 10-point lead following a three-pointer by Morgan Boudreau (Benton, Maine) at 6:26. Maine Maritime took a 22-14 advantage into the second quarter.

Maine Maritime never looked back in the second quarter, taking a 25-point lead with 40 seconds remaining, following a three-pointer from Eryn Doiron (Wilton, Maine) but the Eagles made one from the line to close the gap to 41-17 entering halftime.

Doiron led the Mariners with 11 points in the first half, while Sharena Armstrong led the Eagles with nine points.

The Mariners held the Eagles to five points in the third quarter and cruised to the 80-40 victory.

Samantha Mason (Lamoine, Maine) led the Mariners with 12 points, on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor, and also added two rebounds and one assist. Doiron ended the evening with 11 points, four assists, three rebounds and a steal, while Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) also added 11 points, five rebounds, one assist and a steal and Kane also chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds, one assist and a steal.

Armstrong led the Eagles with 16 points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal and Mercedes Rideout added 11 points and a rebound.

The Mariners shot 39.7 percent from the floor, while the Eagles shot 30.6 percent. The Mariners held a 54-22 edge in rebounds. The Mariners splashed 12 three-pointers during the game, shooting 31.6 percent from beyond the arc.
