Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime women's basketball beat SUNY Canton, 92-54 Friday evening in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup.
How it Happened: The Mariners set the tone early for the rest of the game, starting with a 17-4 run after Makenzie Monzon (Orlando, Fla.) opened up the contest with a strong move to the basket for a made layup. The Kangaroos sunk a three-pointer and hit two foul shots, while Maine Maritime scored seven more points to make the score 24-9 going into the second quarter. Kali Barber (Tampa, Fla.) sparked a 16-6 run to make the score 40-15 with 5:00 left in the half. SUNY Canton went on a run of their own, scoring 12 points to end the half with a score of 47-27 in favor of the Mariners.
The Mariners continued to put pressure on the Kangaroos, starting the second half with back-to-back three-pointers from Lauren Cook (Charlotte, Maine) and Maria Barela (Albuquerque, N.M.). The third quarter ended with a score of 66-45. Maine Maritime had a monstrous fourth quarter, scoring 26 points to put away the game and claim a 92-54 victory.
Inside the Numbers: The Mariners were led by Sydney Echevarria-Briscoe (Englewood, N.J.) who came off the bench recording a double-double with a game- and career-high 18 points and 14 rebounds, along with one steal. Monzon was right behind her with 15 points, shooting 87.5% from the floors, six rebounds, six assists, and one steal. Barela chipped in 12 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Cook and Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) both added 12 points and Erianna Moore (Fitchburg, Mass.) tallied a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, along with five assists, and two blocks.
Joe Culkin led the Kangaroos with 15 points and eight rebounds. Mya Hodge came off the bench adding ten points, four rebounds, and two assists, while Shanelle Borth chipped in eight points, six rebounds, and one assist.
The Mariners shot 50% from the hardwood and 45.8% from beyond the arc, while the Kangaroos shot 24.1% from the floor and 24% from three-point land.
