Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime women's basketball beat UMaine-Presque Isle 83-47 Saturday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup.
How it Happened: The first quarter proved to be a competitive matchup as the two teams continued to trade buckets. With a minute left in the quarter, Erianna Moore (Fitchburg, Mass.) hits an 'and one' to give the Mariners a three point lead. The second quarter was filled with similar action as the first and Emily Wheaton hit two foul shots for the Owls with four seconds left in the half. Maine Maritime quickly inbounded the ball to Maria Barela (Albuquerque, N.M.) and she hit a buzzer beater to send the Mariners into halftime with a 42-29 lead.
The Mariners started the second half with an 18-4 run sparked by Barela who nailed one of her four threes to make the score 60-33 with 2:24 left in the third. The Owls went on to only score two more points in that quarter, as the Mariners went up by 33 going into the fourth. The Mariners continued to hold their advantage over the Owls in the fourth quarter, claiming an 83-47 win.
Inside the Numbers: Lauren Cook (Charlotte, Maine) led all scorers with 19 points, shooting 63.6% from the floor, in addition to three rebounds, two assists and one huge block. Moore tallied a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, along with three assists, two blocks, and one steal. Makenzie Monzon (Orlando, Fla.) added 13 points, six assists, five rebounds, and four steals, while Barela chipped in 12 points, seven assists, and three rebounds.
Alexis Ireland led the Owls with a double-double on 10 points and 12 rebounds, along with six steals and three assists. Emily Wheaton tallied nine points, one rebound, and one steal, while Rebecca Davila and Paige Espling both added eight points.
The Mariners shot 43.5% from the floor and 48.1% from beyond the arc, while the Owls shot 29.6% from the hardwood and 6.3% from three point land.
