Box Score LYNDONVILLE, Vermont – Maine Maritime women's basketball beat NVU-Lyndon 89-39 Friday evening in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup.
How it Happened: The Mariners got off to a quick 12-0 start sparked by Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) who pulled down an offensive rebound and put it back up for a made layup. After a couple made baskets by the Hornets, Crista Link (Huntingtown, Md.) came off the bench for the Mariners, scoring six straight points to extend their lead and end the first quarter with a score of 25-6. The Mariners came out in the second quarter similar to the first with Erianna Moore (Fitchburg, Mass.) hitting one of her three three-pointers to spark a 13-0 run. The Mariners continued to hold the Hornets to only eight points that quarter, going into halftime with a score of 45-14.
After the two teams traded baskets, Makenzie Monzon (Orlando, Fla.) hit a layup to spark a 10-0 run, making the score 59-21 with four minutes left in the third quarter. The Mariners continued to hold their lead throughout the remainder of the third and fourth quarters, claiming a 89-39 victory.
Inside the Numbers: Maria Barela (Albuquerque, N.M.) led the Mariners by recording her third double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, along with one block. Moore tallied 17 points, shooting 70% from the floor, seven rebounds, five assists, and two blocks. Lauren Cook (Charlotte, Maine) chipped in 14 points, while Monzon and Link both added 13 points.
Ariez Pimentel led the Hornets, coming off the bench with eight points, and one steal. Sage Smith added seven points, two rebounds, one assist, and one steal, while Lea Crompton chipped in seven points.
Maine Maritime shot 50% from the hardwood and 38.5% from beyond the arc, while NVU-Lyndon shot 17.9% from the floor and 8.7% from three point land.
Up Next: The Mariners improve to 15-2 overall and 9-0 in conference, while the Hornets fall to 6-5 overall and 1-3 in conference. The Mariners and Hornets return to action tomorrow, January 29 at 3:00pm.
