Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine – Maine Maritime women's basketball beat UMaine-Farmington 66-63 in overtime in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup.
How it Happened: The first quarter was extremely competitive, with both teams trading baskets, until UMaine-Farmington hit two jumpers at the end of the quarter to take a 17-14 lead going into the second. Maria Barela (Albuquerque, N.M.) splashed two three pointers to start the second quarter, taking back the lead. The two teams went back-and-forth for a while, until Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) hit four foul shots and Lauren Cook (Charlotte, Maine) nailed a three point shot to send the Mariners into the half with a 32-27 point lead.
The Mariners came out strong in the second half, scoring five straight points to take a ten point lead. The Beavers answered with ten straight points of their own, tying the game 37-37. Sydney Hodgdon (Hampden, Maine) and Makenzie Monzon (Orlando, Fla.) both hit jumpers to bring the score to 41-37 in favor of the Mariners going into the fourth quarter. The Beavers went on a 7-3 run to start the fourth to tie the game at 44-44. After trading a couple of baskets, the Beavers took a four point lead with four minutes left in the game. Monzon and Sydney Briscoe (Englewood, N.J.) made a pair of layups to tie the game at 54-54 with a minute to go. Alex Bessey came down for the Beavers and nailed a jumper to go up two with 30 seconds left in regulation. Kali Barber (Tampa, Fla.) went back down the floor for the Mariners and banked in a foul line jumper to bring the game into overtime!
Overtime was filled with similar back-and-forth action as regulation. Towards the end, Bessey hit a free throw to give the Beavers a two point lead with 26 seconds remaining in overtime. Maine Maritime advanced the ball to half court and ran a sideline out of bounds play for Cook who nailed a huge three to take a one point lead with 22 seconds left. The Beavers came up short on the other end, having to foul Monzon, who sunk two clutch foul shots to extend the Mariner's lead to three points with two seconds on the clock. The Beavers ran a last minute play but came up empty and the Mariners claimed a 66-63 victory.
Inside the Numbers: Plissey recorded a double-double with game-highs of 17 points and 20 rebounds, three steals, two assists, and two blocks. With those two blocks. Plissey passed the school record for blocked shots in a single season, set by Bekah Campbell, with 66 total this season. Cook added 16 points, two rebounds, two assists, and one steal to the mix, while Barela had 11 points, eight rebounds, and two assists. Monzon chipped in ten points, seven rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
Page Brown led the Beavers with 15 points, five rebounds, two steals, and one block. McKenna Broudeur added 11 points, three rebounds, three steals, and three assists, while Alex Bessey chipped in ten points, eight rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
The Mariners shot 32.9% from the hardwood and 24.1% from beyond the arc, while the Beavers shot 39% from the floor and 19% from three point land.
