Curt Heinz tallied seven of his 23 points in the extra 5-minute session, as Maine Maritime Academy rallied from 17 points down in the second-half to upset host UMaine-Presque Isle, 78-70, in a thrilling North Atlantic Conference men's basketball contest at Wieden Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Maine Maritime (11-5 overall, 7-2 NAC-East Division) extends its winning streak to eight, while halting the division tri-leading Owls' (15-4, 7-2) eight-game win string.
Maine Maritime Highlights
- Heinz notched a double-double by adding 15 rebounds to lead all student-athletes. He also led the team with four assists and two steals.
- Banks finished 11-for-14 from the field, had seven rebounds and tied Heinz with four assists and two steals--off the bench.
- Senior co-captain Carter Rubin added 12 points, four rebounds and two steals.
- Horner chipped in three rebounds and two steals.
UMPI Highlights
- Dwaine Williams scored 16 points and had six rebounds.
- Akhe McMichael contributed 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
- Saquan Carswell (7 points, 8 rebounds) led all playmakers with seven assists against zero turnovers.
How it Happened
- Heinz opened the OT period with a trey at the top of the key to put MMA ahead for the first time--and to stay--at 67-64.
- Horner sank a couple free throws with 50 seconds remaining to make it 76-70 and seal the win.
- Banks, who also made two free throws in the overtime, made a babyhook layup with 14 seconds left in regulation, tying the score at 64-all.
- McMichael missed a three-point field goal attempt with 3 seconds left that could have won the game for UMPI before going to OT.
- Senior Markus Ramirez (4 points) drained a 3ball at the 3-minute, 45-second mark of the second half that knotted things at 60-60.
- Leading 38-31 at halftime, the Owls opened the second half on an 11-4 run to build their biggest lead of the game at 17 points (52-35) on a Williams three-pointer at the 15:01 mark.
- Banks then scored six of MMA's next nine points to ignite a 25-8 run over a 10:19 span that culminated with Ramirez' trey to tie the score for the fourth time.
- UMPI opened the game by scoring the first 11 points before MMA got on the scoreboard with a Banks jumper at 16:25.
- Banks hit a trey to conclude an 18-9 MMA run as the Mariners tied it 20-20 with 8:48 to go before halftime.
- After the teams traded layups, the Owls responded with a 16-9 run of their own to lead by seven at the intermission.
- Maine Maritime, which shot 47.5 percent for the game, made all three of its field goal attempts in the overtime when UMPI went 2-for-12.
- The Mariners also outscored the Owls' bench, 37-17, and attacked the basket by outscoring the home team 15-3 at the free throw line.
Beyond the Boxscore
- The Mariners' 11 victories eclipses last season's 10-15 finish and are the most since 2018-19 during an 11-14 campaign.
- Maine Maritime is 5-2 on the road after going 2-12 in 2023-24.
- Prior to the start of today's action, UMPI, Husson and UMaine-Farmington sat atop the NAC-East standings at 7-1.
- The current eight-game winning streak is believed to be the longest in program history.
- The Owls lead the all-time series 40-22, as today marked MMA's first win in Presque Isle since Feb. 5, 2019.
