Josiah Dancy made two crucial free throws late, to lift Maine Maritime Academy to a 53-50 victory Saturday at Thomas College in North Atlantic Conference men's basketball action at the Larry Mahaney Gymnasium. The Mariners improve to 12-6 overall and 8-2 in the NAC East Division, while the Terriers slip to 7-12 on the season and 4-6 in the NAC-East.
Maine Maritime Highlights
- Heinz, who made 10 of 14 free throw attempts, also led all student-athletes with four blocked shots.
- Dancy finished with seven points, four assists and three rebounds.
- Banks went 8-for-13 from the field with seven rebounds and two steals off the bench.
Thomas Highlights
- Jackson Ruelke also made a double-double of his own with a game-high 21 points and 14 rebounds.
- Camryn Yorke led all players with six assists while contributing six points, eight rebounds and two steals.
How it Happened
- Maine Maritime held Thomas to 27.1 percent field goal shooting and outrebounded the Terriers 46-37.
- With MMA holding on to a 51-49 lead, Dancy made his only two free throws of the day with 27.6 seconds remaining to help seal the win.
- The tightly-contested game featured nine ties and 10 lead changes, and both teams' largest lead was just six points.
- A layup by Banks broke a 40-40 tie with 7 minutes and 34 seconds left to put MMA ahead for good.
- The Mariners proceeded to record their largest lead on three occasions at 46-40 (4:26), 49-43 at 3:13 and 51-45 (1:23).
- After Dancy's free throws, the Terriers missed a three-point attempt, the front end of a one-and-one and another free throw attempt in the final 19 seconds.
- During that same span, MMA got two key defensive rebounds by Banks and Wade Hill as well as Heinz on the offensive end.
- Thomas stayed close by outscoring MMA 14-8 on points off turnovers, but the Mariners had a deeper bench (21-8) and outscored them in the paint, 28-20.
- The teams were tied at halftime, 25-25.
Beyond the Boxscore
- The Terriers lead the all-time series 43-30, but the Mariners have won the last three meetings.
- Maine Maritime earned a regular-season sweep of Thomas--also winning 72-50 on Jan. 15 in Castine--for the first time since 2021-22.
- Banks is the reigning Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association Player of the Week.
- Heinz's 21 rebounds matches a season high and marks the fourth time he's reached 20 in a game in 2024-25.
- Maine Maritime's 8-2 NAC record is believed to be the program's best 10-game conference start.
- The 103 combined points today are the fewest in the history of this series.
- The Mariners' 53 points are the fewest required to win a game since 2012-13 (53-51 vs Husson).
