HORSEHEADS, N.Y.--Maine Maritime Academy women's wrestling history was made on Sunday at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Northeast Region 1 Championships hosted by Elmira College at the Murray Athletic Center, where sophomore
Isa Thesing earned all-region honors in the Mariners first season of NCAA varsity competition.
Maine Maritime also scored a season-high 11 points in a tournament-style format to finish in 11th place at the 11-school event.
Thesing finished 2-3 (160 pounds) at the regional for fifth place, accounting for all 11 of MMA's team points. She won two bouts via fall over Elmira's Camila Hidalgo in 50 seconds and Allison Strausbaugh from Alfred State in 2 minutes and 5 seconds. She missed going to Nationals by just one spot.
Host Elmira edged Sacred Heart for the team title, 154-152. The top-four individual finishers in each weight class will qualify and advance to the NCWWC finals in Iowa. The top-eight finishers in each weight class will be named all-region.
