Jack Banks netted a game-high-tying 19 points to lead four Maine Maritime Academy scorers in double figures, but it wasn't enough as the Mariners saw their furious second-half rally fall just short in a 72-66 defeat at the hands of host UMaine-Farmington in North Atlantic Conference men's basketball action at Dearborn Gymnasium on Wednesday evening. The Mariners fall to 12-8 overall while the Beavers are now 11-11; both teams stand at 8-3 in the NAC-East Division.
Maine Maritime Highlights
- Senior Markus Ramirez scored 11 points and dished four assists.
- Junior Josiah Dancy tallied a season-high 14 points with five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
- Freshman Gabe Hagar had 10 points and four rebounds.
- Senior co-captain Curt Heinz (9 points) led all student-athletes with 14 rebounds and he had four assists.
- Banks shot 7-for-12 from the field and had three rebounds before fouling out.
UMF Highlights
- Jason Reynolds scored 19 points (8-13 FG, 3-4 FT) in 16 minutes off the bench, plus he grabbed eight rebounds.
- Simon Chadbourne added 15 points on five 3-pointers, four rebounds and two steals.
- Dylan Griffin chipped in 13 points, six rebounds and a game-high six assists.
How it Happened
- The Beavers built a 21-point lead, 37-16, with 4 minutes and 24 seconds left in the first half.
- A Hagar jumper inside the paint gave MMA its last lead at 7-5 at the 16:27 mark.
- The Beavers then went on a 23-4 run to forge ahead 28-11.
- UMF never trailed after that key 10-minute stretch, but MMA wouldn't go away quietly.
- The Mariners managed to cut the deficit to 44-30 at halftime.
- In the second half, MMA eventually got back within a couple of possessions at 51-45 after two Heinz free throws at the 11:56 mark.
- After several minutes, the Mariners continued to claw back and cut the deficit to two points on three occasions--the last, 65-63, at 1:24 on the clock after two Dancy free throws.
- But the Beavers hung on to the win by making 5-of-6 six free throws and a field goal attempt as well as forcing a turnover.
- UMF made 48.3 percent of its field goal attempts to a 38.6 clip for MMA.
- The Beavers outscored the Mariners in bench points, 28-19, and points in the paint, 36-24.

- The Beavers hold a 62-11 series advantage, including a 34-2 mark on their home court.
