CASTINE, Maine — Maine Maritime Academy announced the addition of Joseph Swanson to its staff as the assistant athletic director for communications.
Swanson joins MMA after serving as the sports information director at Husson University since December 2021. During his time at Husson, he served as both chair and vice chair of the North Atlantic Conference Sports Information Directors and sat on the conference's all-conference committee.
"We are excited to welcome Joe Swanson to our athletics team," said Bill Mottola, director of athletics. "Joe's experience and passion for telling the stories of student-athletes make him a perfect fit for our department. We look forward to the energy and expertise he will bring to enhancing our communications and promoting the achievements of our programs."
"I would like to thank Bill Mottola and the entire hiring committee for this incredible opportunity at Maine Maritime," said Swanson. "I'm excited to get to work promoting MMA, its student-athletes, its coaches and helping to grow the department's brand. I look forward to working alongside a talented staff of coaches and administrators and bringing my knowledge to the department."
At Husson, Swanson oversaw the department's transition from its original Presto website to a modernized Sidearm site. He played a pivotal role in expanding the Eagles' social media presence, strengthening on-campus partnerships, building one of the top student-worker staffs in the region and mentoring future SIDs through hands-on experience.
Prior to his time at Husson, Swanson worked as the assistant sports information director at Averett University, where he helped grow the institution's broadcasting platform and mentored student workers and graduate assistants.
With over a decade of experience in collegiate athletics across NCAA Divisions I, II and III, Swanson brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding to a growing department.
