CASTINE, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy Men's Basketball program is excited to announce the addition of Sammy Rodriguez to its 2026 recruiting class, the second under Head Coach Cedric Gillette.

Rodriguez, a 5'8" guard from Floresville, Texas, joins the Mariners after a remarkable career at Floresville High School, where he established himself as one of the most accomplished players in program history. As a senior, Rodriguez averaged 18.6 points, 3.3 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game while leading the Tigers to another successful season in one of Texas' highly competitive basketball classifications.

Throughout his high school career, Rodriguez helped lead Floresville to two Bi-District Championships, two Area Championships, a Regional Semifinal appearance, and four consecutive playoff appearances. Individually, he earned Newcomer of the Year honors in District 27-4A, was a three-time First Team All-District selection, a two-time Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) All-Region honoree, and was selected to three all-star games. Rodriguez also eclipsed the 1,000-point milestone and finished his career as Floresville High School's all-time leading scorer with 1,792 career points.

Away from the court, Rodriguez enjoys spending time with family and friends and playing golf. He chose Maine Maritime Academy because it provides the opportunity to continue competing at the collegiate level while earning a degree that will prepare him for a successful career. Rodriguez plans to major in International Business & Logistics at Maine Maritime Academy.

What They're Saying About Sammy Rodriguez

Cedric Gillette, Head Coach, Maine Maritime:
"We are really excited to add Sammy to our program. The best way I can describe him is that he plays like the Energizer Bunny, he never turns off. He plays with unbelievable energy every single possession, and that kind of competitiveness is contagious. He's the type of player that makes everyone around him better because of how hard he plays.

Sammy has an infectious personality, and he's a guy who can do just about everything on the basketball court. He can score it, make plays for his teammates, defend, and make winning plays in so many different ways. Watching him really reminded me of some of the undersized guards I had the opportunity to coach at Merrimack. Those guys had an incredible impact on winning because they were tough, fearless competitors, and I see a lot of those same qualities in Sammy.

We had a great visit with Sammy when he came to campus in the spring, and it didn't take long after that for him to know this was where he wanted to be. The commitment came together pretty quickly because it just felt like a great fit for both sides. Sammy is a tremendous young man, and I have no doubt he's going to have a very successful career as a Mariner. I can't wait to get him on campus and get to work."

Maurice "Moe" Harrison, Head Coach, Next Level Raiders Elite:
"I've always said if I'm in the trenches Sammy is player I pick to be beside me. I've had taller and stronger players, but I know Sammy's going give everything he has and fight to the end. This is why he will be an asset to your program. He's going to give you everything he has and fight to the end."
