Mariners lose late lead and fall to Beavers

FARMINGTON, Maine -- The University of Maine at Farmington overcame a double-digit deficit with 3:53 left in the second half to come back for a 69-65 win over Maine Maritime Academy in North Atlantic Conference men's basketball action this afternoon at Dearborn Gymnasium.

The Beavers -- winners of eight of their last nine contests -- improved to 9-10 overall and 9-1 in the NAC. Farmington is slated to visit Green Mountain College Friday (women at 6 p.m., men to follow). The Mariners (5-15, 1-8) are scheduled to host Husson University Tuesday.

Eric Taylor (Oakland, ME) paced the Beavers with 19 points, while Josh Tanguay (Gorham, ME) added 18 points and eight boards and Eric Lelansky (Portland, ME) had 17 points. DJ Gerrish (Rumford, ME), a catalyst in the second-half rally, dished out seven assists and made three steals, while Andrew Dean (Gorham, ME) pitched in with eight points and nine rebounds.

MMA led 64-54 with 3:53 to play, but the Beavers went on an 11-1 run over the next 2:32 with a Tanguay layup knotting the game at 65. After a MMA miss, Taylor knocked down two foul shots with 49 seconds remaining for a 67-65 lead for Farmington. Another empty trip for the Mariners was followed by two free throws by Dean for the 69-65 win.

Bryant Ciomei (Stonington, ME) scored 13 points for the Mariners with Jarred Sternbergh (Jonesboro, ME) chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds. Ben Russell (Farmington, ME) and Tyler Pineo (Corinth, ME) scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.

In the first half, Lelansky scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and Tanguay threw in 12 points as the Beavers led 35-32 at intermission.

Farmington led by seven points with 14:45 remaining in the game, but the Mariners rolled on a 24-5 run over a 9:26 span in the second half to build a 62-50 lead. Russell scored seven points with Ciomei and Travis Shaw (Bradley, ME) each adding five points.

Russell hit a 3-pointer with 5:19 remaining in the game for a 62-50 command, but that was the final field goal for the Mariners as the Beavers followed with their game-winning run in a 69-65 win.
