Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – Maine Maritime Academy Men's Basketball stumbled on the road to Lehman College, 80-54 on Tuesday afternoon in the Eighth Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Basketball Classic.
"Many of our guys have never been to New York City before, so to be able to experience all the Big Apple has to offer culturally, along with competing against a top flight opponent and raising money for cancer research, this trip truly was a win for our program despite the game's result," said head coach David Muchnick.
The Mariners jumped out to a 10-9 lead early in the first half, but Lehman outscored Maine Maritime 31-14 to take a 40-24 lead into the half.
Lehman came out strong in the second half, steadily increasing their lead until Nick Holt (Ellsworth, Maine) scored 10-straight unanswered points to give the Mariners momentum. Lehman's lead proved to be too large for Maine Maritime to overcome, falling 80-54.
Holt ended the afternoon with a team-high 16 points, two rebounds and an assist while Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) added 11 points, four rebounds, two steals and an assist. Brian Goda (Portsmouth, N.H.) led the Mariners off the bench with 10 points, three defensive boards, and a pair of steals.
Jerrome Jones scored a game-high 18 points to lead Lehman, while grabbing five boards, two blocks, an assist, and a steal. Jonathan Greenfield added 13 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and three assists.
"Thank you to Head Women's Coach Eric Harrison and Head Men's Basketball Coach Steven Shulman for their generous invitation for our basketball program to participate in the 8th annual Coaches vs Cancer Classic at Lehman College. The entire trip has been a very rewarding both educational and athletic experience for our players and staff," said Muchnick.
The Mariners (1-9) will return to action on January 10th when they travel to Husson University for a North Atlantic Conference rematch.
Muchnick added, "New York City is known worldwide for its toughness, along with producing some of college basketball's best athletes. Playing a team as gifted and well-coached as Lehman College will undoubtedly pay dividends as we work to reach our goal of earning a berth in the NAC Tournament."
