Box Score THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) scored a career-high 23 points to lead Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball to a thrilling 65-58 victory over SUNY Maritime on Saturday afternoon at Riesenberg Hall Gym.
The Mariners jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead following a three from Newcomb and jumpers from Dylan Stevens (Wells, Maine) and Tyler Gilson (Thomaston, Maine), but the Privateers tied things up and went on to take a brief four-point lead after five-straight points by Michael Walker.
The two teams battled back and forth and entered the intermission deadlocked at 31-31.
Maine Maritime took the lead with 17:42 left in the half and never fell behind for the remainder of the game.
The Privateers closed the gap to one with 2:39 remaining, but Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) sank a jumper to extend the lead to three, and with 16 seconds left splashed a three-pointer to give the Mariners a six-point lead.
Newcomb pulled down a huge defensive rebound following a failed three-point attempt from Walker, and converted on a free throw to secure the victory for the Mariners in the final seconds.
Newcomb followed up a 19-point performance in the Mariners' season opener with a new career-high 23 points and added three rebounds, two assists and two steals to lead Maine Maritime. Thayer added an impressive 14 points, a game-high six steals, three assists and a rebound and Stevens finished the afternoon with 11 points, a team-high six boards, four assists and a block.
Patrick MacDonald led the Privateers with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds, while adding two steals and two blocks. John Liccese tallied nine points, six assists, three rebounds and a steal, while Pat Conway added eight points.
The Mariners (1-1) return to action tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. when they take on the United States Merchant Marine Academy, and the Privateers (0-3) will host Vassar College on Tuesday, November 24 at 6:00 p.m.
