Box Score STANDISH, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to Saint Joseph's College on Tuesday night, 73-71 in the season-opener for both teams.
The Mariners went on an 13-2 run, highlighted by four points from senior Dylan Price (Madison, Maine) and a three-pointer by freshman Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine), to close out the first half and took a 37-33 lead into the intermission.
Maine Maritime started the scoring in the second half, picking up three-pointers from junior Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) and junior Nick Judge (Cushing, Maine) on back-to-back possessions, to take a 43-35 lead. DePatsy sank a three-pointer at 13:55 sparking a 17-9 run by the Mariners, led by 11–straight points from Newcomb to give the Mariners a 62-51 lead, their biggest of the night. The Monks responded with seven unanswered points to close the gap to 62-58 with 6:39 to go and outscored the Mariners 15-5 in the final five minutes of the game, to overcome Maine Maritime for the victory.
Newcomb led the Mariners with a game-high 26 points, including going 6-for-9 from behind the arc and a perfect 6-for-6 from the line, six rebounds, an assist, and a steal. DePatsy ended the evening with 15 points, two rebounds, and an assist and senior Tyler Gilson (Thomaston, Maine) tallied 12 points, on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor, a team-high eight rebounds and five assists. Price led the Mariners with seven assists, while also chipping in with four points, three rebounds, and a steal.
Marc Corey led the Monks with 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and a steal, while teammate Aaron Hall added 12 points off the bench and Quinn Richardson-Newton added 11 points, seven rebounds and a steal.
The Mariners fall to 0-1 on the season and will travel to Williams College on Friday, November 18 to take on Framingham State at 8:00 p.m, while the Monks improve to 1-0 and will hit the road to take on Husson on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
