Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball defeated Lyndon on Saturday afternoon, 67-56 in North Atlantic Conference action inside of Smith Gymnasium.
The Hornets jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but a jumper from Dylan Stevens (Wells, Maine) and a three-pointer from D.J. Harris (Vallejo, Calif.) tied things up at 5-5 with 14:19 remaining in the first half. After exchanging the lead back-and-forth, the Mariners went on a five-point run to take a 12-7 lead.
Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) hit a pair of free throws and a jumper to give the Mariners their biggest lead of the half with 40 seconds remaining. Kendrick Mills added a jumper as time expired to close Maine Maritime's lead to 34-24 at the intermission.
Lyndon State outscored the Mariners 7-2 to cut the lead to 36-31 with 17 minutes to go. Adam Richardson (Bradley, Maine) hit a jumper and Zachary Radcliffe (Rumford, Maine) sank a three to make it a 10-point game at 15:56. Lyndon's Corey Frost answered with back-to-back threes to make it 41-37 with 14:50 remaining.
Following another Radcliffe three, the Hornets scored six-straight to cut the lead to 49-47 but Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) hit a three and drew a foul. Capitalizing on the four-point play by Thayer, the Mariners took a 53-47 lead at 6:55.
The Hornets added three points to close the gap to 53-50, but Thayer hit a jump shot and Radcliffe sank another three to extend the lead to 58-50 with three minutes to go.
The Mariners outscored the Hornets 9-4 to close out the final two minutes and claim the victory.
Thayer ended the afternoon with a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double, while also dishing out three assists and two steals. Radcliffe recorded 15 points, all from beyond the arc, two rebounds, two assists and a steal and Newcomb tallied 14 points, four assists, a steal and a rebound.
Kevin Love led Lyndon with 18 points, four rebounds and two assists, while teammate Shaun Hill chipped in with 16 points, a team-high eight rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
Maine Maritime shot 45.3 percent from the floor, 40.9 percent from three-point land and 71.4 percent from the line, while the Hornets won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Mariners 31-29.
With the win, the Mariners improve to 4-16 overall and 3-10 in the NAC, while the Hornets fall to 7-13 on the season and 5-9 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday, February 9 when they travel to take on Maine-Farmington at 7:30 p.m. for a NAC matchup.
