Box Score LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – Senior Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) scored a game-high 19 points to surpass 1,000 career points and lead Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball to a 75-60 victory against Lyndon State College on Friday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Stannard Gymnasium.
To go with his 19 points, Newcomb added five steals, three rebounds and an assist. Newcomb becomes just the 12th player in Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball history to reach the milestone.
With the victory the Mariners improve to 2-13 overall and 1-7 in conference play, while the Hornets fall to 2-12 on the season and 2-6 in the NAC. Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow against Johnson State College at 3:00 pm.
The Mariners and Hornets exchanged the lead back-and-forth in the first five minutes of the game, until Maine Maritime went on a 9-2 run to take an 18-11 lead at 11:31. Lyndon answered back with eight-unanswered points to take a one-point lead at 6:41. Newcomb splashed a three to give the Mariners a two-point advantage, but the Hornets answered with a pair of threes to take a 25-21 lead with 4:37 to go in the half. Newcomb forced a turnover and made a layup to close the gap to four (27-23) and Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) hit a three in the final seconds of the half to cut Lyndon's lead to 31-29 at halftime.
Maine Maritime came out hot in the second half, using a 10-2 run to take a 39-33 lead. The Mariners never looked back, outscoring the Hornets 46-29 in the second half, to claim the 75-60 victory.
DePatsy finished the evening with 14 points and three rebounds, while Riley Jorgenson (Vienna, Va.) also tallied 14 points and added five rebounds, an assist and a steal. Andrew Liebert (Plano, Texas) contributed a career-high 10 points, five rebounds and an assist.
Ricky Shuford led the Hornets with 18 points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal while teammate Corey Frost added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists and CJ Jimmy contributed 10 points, five rebounds and two assists.
The Mariners shot 40.6 percent from the floor, while the Hornets shot 39.0 percent from the floor. Lyndon held a narrow 39-38 edge in rebounds.
