Monks Outlast Mariners

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 81-72 on Tuesday night in non-conference action inside of Smith Gymnasium.

How it Happened: The Mariners used a seven-point run to take a 14-6 lead at 12:32, but the Monks battled back and took a 23-19 advantage at 9:06. The two teams battled closely in the closing minutes of the first half and entered halftime deadlocked at 34-34.

St. Joe's used an 11-point run to take a 66-59 lead with 5:54 remaining and took a double-figure lead (71-61) with less than four minutes to play. The Mariners closed the gap to seven points on two occasions with under one minute to play, but St. Joe's hung on for the win.

Inside the Numbers: Riley Jorgenson (Vienna, Va.) led the Mariners with 17 points, five rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block, Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) contributed 16 points, five rebounds, two assists and a block and DeMerrill Levy (Houston, Texas) added 13 points, a game-high eight assists, five rebounds and a steal. Kimani Anderson (Houston, Texas) chipped in with 11 points, a team-best eight rebounds, three steals and an assist.

Jack Casale led the Monks with a double-double of 28 points and 16 rebounds, while also adding three assists, and a steal, David Keohan recorded 18 points, two rebounds and a block and Griffin Foley chipped in with 16 points, three rebounds and three steals.

The Mariners shot 45.8 percent from the floor and 52.9 percent from behind the arc, while the Monks shot 48.2 percent overall and 24.1 percent from three-point land. The Mariners held a 33-31 edge in rebounds, but committed 23 turnovers while the Monks only committed 17.

Up Next: The Mariners fall to 2-8 on the season, while the Monks improve to 5-7 overall. Maine Maritime returns to action on Friday night when they host SUNY Canton at 7:30 pm for a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup.
