Box Score DELHI, N.Y. – Maine Maritime men's basketball fell to SUNY Delhi, 82-71 Saturday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup.
How it Happened: The first ten minutes of the contest proved to be extremely competitive between the Mariners and the Broncos. Both teams traded baskets early on, with the game tied at 18 all with ten minutes left in the first half. SUNY Delhi then went on a 19-3 run to make the score 37-21 with three minutes to go in the first half. Cameron Kingsbury (Port Clyde, Maine) hit one of his two three pointers to bring the Mariners into the half with a score of 43-26 in favor of the Broncos.
Cameron Gerlach (Hendersonville, Tenn.) sparked the Mariners offense in the second half with a layup to go on a 18-6 run, bringing the Broncos lead down to nine with 13 minutes left in the game. The Mariners continued to cut down the Broncos lead, getting within four points after Carter Rubin (Littleton, Colo.) splashed one of his four threes with 9:28 left on the clock. SUNY Delhi answered by extending the lead back to 13 with five minutes left in the game. Maine Maritime made one last run at the Broncos and Curt Heinz (Stuttgart, Germany) powered up a three point play to get the Mariners back within four points again. The Broncos continued to hold their advantage over the Mariners after a couple sets of free throws to claim a 82-71 win.
Inside the Numbers: Markus Ramirez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) lead the Mariners with 18 points, on 50% shooting from the hardwood and beyond the arc, along with two rebounds, and one assist. Rubin added 16 points, six rebounds, two steals, and one assist, while Heinz came off the bench recording a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebound.
Mavenson Therneus lead the Broncos with a game-high 29 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, and one block. Norman Wilson added 24 points, six assists, and four rebounds.
The Mariners shot 44.6% from the floor and 38.5% from beyond the arc, while the Broncos shot 47.2% from the hardwood and 26.3% from three point land.
Up Next: The Mariners fall to 2-9 overall and 1-2 in conference, while the Broncos improve to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in conference. Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow, January 9 at 1:00pm against SUNY Cobleskill for a conference matchup.
