CASTINE, Maine – Director of Athletics, Steve Peed announced Lance Moore as the Head Men's Wrestling Coach at Maine Maritime Academy on Wednesday, July 26. The committee was chaired by Associate Director of Athletics, Tricia Carver.
Â
"I am proud to welcome Coach Moore to MMA and Mariners Athletics. He is everything our wrestlers deserve in a coach and exactly who our department needs," said Carver. "Coach Moore has demonstrated success in growing a positive and competitive culture. His recruiting talent and love of the sport make him the ideal leader as we transition MMA Wrestling to varsity status."
Â
Moore will officially join the Mariners in Castine on Monday, August 14. Men's wrestling will remain a club sport at Maine Maritime for the 2023-2024 season, then will move into NCAA competition beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year.
Â
"I'm very excited to be given the opportunity to be the Head Men's Wrestling Coach at Maine Maritime Academy. It's a very prestigious school both academically and athletically, and it's an honor to be given this position," said Moore. "When I spoke with President Paul, Director of Athletics, Mr. Peed, Coach Carver, and other coaches at MMA it was clear that there is a lot of support for the team and athletics in general. There has been a successful Men's Club Wrestling Team here for several years, and I look forward to helping the program make the transition to the NCAA level."
Â
Moore comes to Castine from Northeastern Pennsylvania where he was the Head Wrestling Coach at Keystone College. At Keystone, Moore grew the wrestling program from two student-athletes rostered to more than 20 within two years. Moore also coached two wrestlers who placed at the NCAA Mideast Regional, which was the first in program history.
Â
Before Keystone, Moore served as an Assistant Wrestling Coach at the University of Scranton. There, he helped lead his team to a recording-breaking 15-4 record and coached an athlete that qualified for the NCAA DIII Nationals, which was the first time in over a decade for the program.
Â
"I am excited to welcome Coach Moore to our staff to lead our transition from a club wrestling program to an NCAA program. I am confident we have the right person to lead our wrestlers and grow them as young men," said Peed. "I am incredibly grateful for the time and effort by Don McCann and Peter Stewart to lay the foundation for our program and to Coach Carver for her excellent, steadfast work in identifying the right fit for our department."
Â
Moore is also a decorated wrestler himself, both in the collegiate and high school level. He started his collegiate career at Niagara County Community College, where he finished third in the nation in 2012 and was named a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American. Moore than transferred to SUNY Cortland, where he qualified for the NCAA Tournament at heavyweight in 2014 in addition to being named National Wrestling Coaches NWCA Academic All-American. Moore finished his collegiate career with over 100 victories and was a four-time place winner at the New York State Collegiate Tournament. In high school, Moore finished his career with a record of 141-16.
Â
As a Factoryville, Pennsylvania native, Moore holds a bachelor's degree in communications from SUNY Cortland in 2015.
