BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Maine Maritime Academy men's wrestling competed in the Bridgeport Open on Saturday, hosted by the University of Bridgeport.
At 133 pounds, sophomore Trevor Llewellyn dropped both of his matches on the day. He lost the first by pinfall and the second by technical fall.
Sophomore Gavin Ripley went 2-2 at 149 pounds. In his first match, he dropped a 14-11 decision before bouncing back with a 10-3 decision and a pinfall victory. He dropped his next match by a 15-6 major decision.
At 155 pounds, sophomore Wyndham Freeman went 0-2, dropping his first match by technical fall and his second by pin.
Sophomore Nikita Smirnov dropped both of his matches at 174 pounds, with both losses coming by pin.
At 184 pounds, sophomore Kyle Stickel went 2-2. After dropping his first match by technical fall, he bounced back with a pinfall and a 16-6 major decision before falling by pin.
At 195 pounds, the Mariners had three wrestlers compete: sophomore Gregory Brunk and first years Andrew Morrow and Michael Rollins. Brunk went 2-3 with wins by pinfall and a 25-10 technical fall. Morrow dropped all five of his matches, while Rollins went 3-2 with two wins by pinfall and a 21-4 technical fall.
In the 285-pound division, freshman Takuma Steinberger went 4-1, earning wins by pinfall, a 6-1 decision, a 3-2 decision by tiebreak, and a 16-1 technical fall. His only loss was by major decision.
