In 1985 he was promoted to Dean of Admissions, and from 1986-94 he held the position of Vice President for External Affairs. In August of 1994 he was asked to serve as Interim President following the retirement of Ken Curtis. On March 22, 1995, Len Tyler began his official tenure as President of Maine Maritime Academy.

Some of his major professional achievements during his years of service to MMA include managing the most successful fundraising effort in the college’s history; developing a highly effective student recruitment program resulting in full enrollment and the largest number of applicants in MMA’s history; substantially increasing the amount of federal and private funds for student financial aid; and establishing the college’s first development, alumni affairs, and public relations offices.

In addition to his duties and accomplishments at MMA, Len has served as the Chair of the Maine Higher Education Council; on the Board of Directors for the American Bureau of Shipping; and was the former Chair of the International Association of Maritime Universities. Jim Dyer, Director of Athletics states “President Tyler has been the quintessential ambassador for Maine Maritime Academy and a great supporter of the value of the athletic experience for our students”. Len is scheduled to retire in August of 2010.
